Captured Russian Soldiers know that they can't ever go back to Russia or they will be shot

If you are a Russian soldier you are "Cannon fodder" and that's all you are. Why?

Because if you study how Russian soldiers were treated during World War II this is the way they are treated.

Right now if you advance you might stay alive and if you retreat you will be shot by officers. So, if you allow yourself to be captured then you can never go home to Russia or you will be shot. This is just the way it is for Russian soldiers and has been most always.

But, this is also why Americans win wars. We have a chain of command. We tell our troops the truth about what is coming next and they honor the chain of command because that helps keep them alive.

Russian soldiers have never had this because it's mostly officers and draftees. If you are drafted the oligarchs stole the money to train you to be a soldier. So, the likelihood in a war like this is that you will die.

So, it's even worse than it was for American Draftees in the Viet Nam War when most of them were wounded or came back in body bags the first few weeks that they were there in Viet Nam.

At least most of them had six weeks training and had finished high school somewhere before they were sent to war. And they were told what was happening.

This hasn't been true of most Russian Draftees who were sent into Ukraine not even being told that they were supposed to fight Ukrainians. No wonder the Russian Army is having a problem, a very serious problem of lying to their troops and then shooting them if they don't fight when they weren't even told that they were being sent into fighting to begin with and hadn't had any training at all.

You cannot really win a war when most of your troops are ONLY Cannon Fodder and that's all.

So, the only way for the draftees to survive likely is to surrender so they might stay alive and then live in another country or something. Because going home will now be fatal for them.
