What originally attracted me to Tibetan Buddhism?

The main reason was: "Compassion for all life in the Universe".

Many philosophies talk about doing this but Tibetan Buddhist actually do it.

For example, because they believe in reincarnation they train Buddhist monks in training to develop compassion by perceiving all living things having once been their mother. By doing this it is quite easy to have compassion for all living things not only on earth but all living things anywhere in the physical universe.

Though you might see this as paradoxical or not be able to process this in a useful way: "I know that the surface of earth cannot support (for thousands of years (or even any more hundreds of years) 8 billion or more people.

So, my point of view is: "It is better that some humans survive than no human survive."

For example, looking at the world right now we are heading for nuclear armageddon which I believe is a 50-50 chance right now within 5 to 10 years time as long as Putin remains in power in Russia.

I recently heard a young man in Ukraine telling CNN how his father believes what Russian propaganda is saying on the news and won't even believe his son that civilians are being carpet bombed in Ukraine. So, the father says to his son in Ukraine that he doesn't believe him. AND THIS IS A FATHER AND A SON(one in Russia and one in Ukraine). So, this is how bad the misinformation is right now in Russia.

The point being we all need to have enough compassion for ourselves and others that some humans survive this century.

However, short of a nuclear war that turns Earth into an Asteroid belt like the one the planet became out past Mars which is known now as the Asteroid belt, I don't think war is going to be what thins us out the most here on earth this century.

I presently believe Global Climate change is what is mostly going to kill about 7 billion of us this century. I'm not sure exactly how the 1 billion or less humans survive but it's likely by living inland away from oceans in Mountains like places like Colorado by 2100 and living mostly underground where winds won't blow away your house. Because all wooden houses and all trees above ground might blow away by 2100 AD in most places on earth. So, even growing crops will have to be done in greenhouses partly underground with bulletproof glass or strong plexiglas or coverings the sun can get through.

So, for me, having enough compassion so that I and my family can survive this century and having enough compassion that at least some of mankind survive worldwide too I find very helpful now that Lifeboat theory is the only way people are going to survive this century on earth unfortunately.

Have you ever seen the movie with a young Leonardo De Caprio from the 1990s?

Titanic(1997).

What happens with the lifeboats in that movie is a metaphor for what will happen on earth this century automatically caused by Global Climate changes out of control completely. So, the poorest in 3rd world nations who don't have the wealth (or lifeboats) to help them are likely the ones who won't make it first.

Of course, you could look at what Russia is doing to Ukraine and make that a lifeboat Theory problem as well if you wish.

Anyway you look at it it won't be pretty what happens this century. So, having compassion for oneself and everyone else while also realizing that only less than 1 billion humans are actually sustainable on the surface of earth might be important for anyone who wishes to psychologically and physically survive what is coming for us this century worldwide.

Lifeboat ethics is a metaphor for resource distribution proposed by the ecologist Garrett Hardin in two articles published in 1974, building on his earlier 1968 article detailing "The tragedy of the commons". Hardin's 1974 metaphor describes a lifeboat bearing fifty people with room for ten more.
