My son was telling me that in the Portland Area he was just trying to walk his garbage outside to the garbage cans area and found that he almost fell down about 10 times on the ice. Then there are stairs up to where his car is and those also were impassable safely. So, he tried with a garden trowel to break the ice. I told him to use a hammer but since the steps are cement I realized later that if the hammer broke more than the ice likely that wasn't a good idea either. However, I wasn't there.
So, the point of this is that all schools in the Portland area were closed today because no one could get there safely either walking or driving anything.
He said some neighbors were trying to put chains on their vehicles to go out somewhere but they were sliding all over the place even with chains.
So, it wasn't really safe enough to drive ANYTHING under these conditions. It made me wonder how many people died because ambulances and Fire Engines and Police cars could not get safely to them in Portland today?
