If you spend more than 2 or 3 days at higher Altitudes then your body starts to produce more Red Cells in your blood. This allows you to survive on less oxygen in the air at higher altitudes with thinner air by increasing the capacity for taking on oxygen through having more red blood cells. A friend of mine living at 3500 to 3700 feet in altitude and visiting locally up to 10,000 feet or more in the mountains regularly was telling me this. I likely learned this already in High School or College. However, sometimes you take in so much information during a lifetime that you have to be reminded of things like this.
There is another way to more quickly adapt to higher altitudes that I have used when skiing in Mt. Shasta or going to high places like Santa Fe, New Mexico or the ski lifts above Santa Fe which are at 9000 to 10,000 feet I think which is Cell food which you put about 8 drops in a bottle of water which prepares you for dealing with higher altitudes. Before I started doing this in preparation for higher altitudes I would have to wait (as an older person) 2 to 3 days before I could safely go skiing without being light headed. But, when I started drinking the treated water on the coast and kept drinking it all the way to Mt. Shasta or wherever I was going to ski or go to altitude I was fine usually the first day there or at least by the 2nd day at the latest for altitudes where you sleep above 7000 feet. The real problem I find is not Being at higher altitudes it is mostly about sleeping above 5000 to 7000 feet in altitude. This I always found to be the hardest adjustment to make.
