Fox News reporter John Roberts said on Monday that President’s Trump press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin will cost him “dearly politically” amid the "growing consensus" that Trump sided with Russia over the U.S.
“The early indications are that this is going to cost the president dearly politically,” Roberts said of the president’s summit with Putin in Helsinki on Monday.
“Now, he is taking it on the chin, not just from Democrats but Republicans as well, and from literally every state across the nation,” Roberts continued.
“I think, diplomatically, you could probably say that the president’s strategy was [that] he wanted to engage Putin,” Roberts said. “He didn’t want to say anything that was going to tick him off. But there is a growing consensus across the land that tonight the president threw the United States under the bus."
The president drew immediate backlash from both sides of the aisle following his joint press conference with Putin, with even several top conservative figures tearing into him for his comments.
Trump also slammed the special counsel investigation into the election interference, calling Robert Mueller's probe a “disaster for our country.”
The president’s comments come just days after Mueller indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers and charged them with hacking the Democratic National Committee.
“He just said it’s not Russia,” Trump said of Putin. “I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be.”
