I got up early and it was still foggy in Santa Barbara so I knew I didn't want to leave until at least 10 am because of this. I knew as soon as I left the ocean on 101 and headed inland towards Buellton that the fog would leave and it would start warming up which it did. It was 60s and 70s along the ocean but inland it went up to 93 degrees Fahrenheit up by Paso Robles in San Miguel there on 101. So, there is an amazing temperature difference right now in summer between the coast and inland all the way from San Diego north to the Oregon Border. So, even in Santa Barbara now the June Glooms are on at least for now until 2pm or 3 pm in the afternoon and then mostly the sun comes out until it sets around 8:15pm now. Further north where I live closer to San Francisco it sets at least 15 minutes later (when you can see it set) now that the June Glooms have started.
What you might ask are the June Glooms? It simply means that the ocean fog is drawn off the ocean over the land and obscures the sun and this can happen in the San Francisco or Santa Cruz or further north or south anytime between April and August. This year it only started the last week or so from San Francisco to Los Angeles or even further south.
What happens is the deserts warm up to over 100 degrees which causes the hot air to rise which then draws the moist air off the ocean further onto the land which means you might not see the sun much from June until August along the coast. The best place for the sun to be there is likely the Los Angeles Area though and some times San Diego during the summers.
But, that doesn't mean that you don't get 110 degrees or more Fahrenheit in Hollywood and Glendale and the San Fernando Valley either because we are talking mostly just along the coast and about 10 miles or more inland. But, it can some days (the fog high or low or both) go 20 to 50 miles inland if it is really really hot in the deserts like when it's over 105 to 125 degrees there.
So, I had a mostly nice trip today driving 4 or 5 hours north to the SF Bay area on the coast from Santa Barbara.
