My thought after studying what is happening in Syria and it's short and long term effects on the entire middle East and Europe as well as north Africa is that Sunni nations (basically all the ones where we are closing embassies) are really pissed off with the United States because we didn't go in and get rid of Assad like we got rid of Qadhaffi.
However, the average person in the middle East is not educated in the way where they would fully understand what happened during the Cold War from the end of World War II until around 1990. So, they cannot understand why we don't confront Russia and Iran and indirectly China and flatten Assad.
The first reason we aren't doing that is because we don't want to nuke the whole planet out of existence for any reason.
The second reason the U.S. isn't doing that is Al Qaeda that blew up our Twin Towers in New York on 9-11-01.
The third reason we haven't put Assad in a pine box is that we might want him to be there instead of a Caliphate state run by Al Qaeda. So, there you have it.
However, in the meantime, Al Qaeda is on a big recruitment drive throughout all Sunni nations based upon, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". From this logic ANYONE who rids Syria of Assad is the friend to all Sunni States like Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait etc. etc. etc.
100,000 people who are now dead from upspeakable acts by Assad and now Hezbollah make Al Qaeda to many if not most Sunnis seem like protectors of the Sunni people. I think you would have to have Sunni relatives tortured and killed and then their deaths displayed over and over again on youtube.com to completely understand how awful this situation is for Sunni Muslims Worldwide.
Is there a sectarian world war between Sunnis and Shias? I would have to say at this point: Yes!
Is it going to get much worse than it is now? I would have to say: Yes!
And will the U.S. be attacked one or more times by Al Qaeda because we were not more forceful in overthrowing Assad? I would say this might be very likely at this point. Is this going to make the whole thing worse and worse? I would say this whole situation is sort of like a world wide bomb waiting to go off. IF you combine the Cold War and a Hot war in the middle East at the same time you sort of get the actual threat the world is facing now. And what does that do to middle East Oil? What Oil? If this gets much worse no oil will flow anywhere from the middle east. This is why this is so serious for the whole world. All countries diplomats should be working overtime right about now, especially because of the anniversary of 9-11 coming up soon now for the whole world.
