5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Panama

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 shook Panama on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake's epicenter was about 37 miles south of David, Panama, at a depth of 17.3 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The preliminary magnitude was 6.2, but it was revised down.
No tsunami advisories were issued.
It comes a day after a magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile, killing at least six people. While numerous aftershocks have been reported in Chile since then, the Panama quake is considered a separate event, not an aftershock, the USGS said.
Panama's head of emergency services, Arturo Alvarado, told Reuters there were no reports of damage, but that schools and homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution. Some citizens reported light and moderate shaking to the USGS.
