A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Solomon Islands Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, and tsunami warnings were issued for the island chain and its neighbors.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. The warning has since been cancelled.
The quake struck around 7:15 a.m. local time and occurred about 62 miles southeast of the town of Kirakira, Solomon Islands, at a depth of 18.2 miles, the USGS reported.
The temblor originally was registered as a magnitude-8.3 before being revised downward.
