When may youngest daughter (in high school) and my wife and I had just a regular DVR from our cable company we were always fighting about what to record. But, then my son home from college and a real technology wizz said, "Why don't we get you guys a TIVO. They're having a special right now on Tivo Elites that will likely record about 1000 hours of HD so you guys don't have to fight over what to record and what to delete anymore.
So, I think it was about 500 dollars for the TIVO setup and about another 500 dollars for unlimited use of the TIVO that never ends unless the device can't be fixed at some point. So, then connected to our living room 60 inch flatscreen that also has a Roku connected to it with Netflix and Amazon prime and others it works great. Lately we decided to add the HBO package to our cable so we could watch Game of Thrones and other stuff too and record those episodes on our TIVO to watch anytime we chose.
Another reason I like my Tivo Elite is that when you record something you can stop it and as long as you don't delete it (even 1 year later if you set it up right) wherever you stop watching a program or movie you just go back to it and hit resume and it will continue exactly where you left off.
Because of this I'm never upset if my daughter or wife wants the TV because whatever I want to watch I will be able to within 24 to 48 hours unless we are out of town or have a lot of appointments or whatever. So, arguments don't happen as much over Tv stuff because we can record about 1000 hours of stuff in HD which is great. Though I do go through every so often and delete everything I know I or we won't watch anymore after consulting with them about it.
So, I find if I keep the percentage of space recorded below about 70% the thing operates the best. If you go above 70% or 75% it starts to trigger all sorts of automatic operations that start deleting the oldest stuff you have recorded. And if you don't have the green light next to it which means basically "Don't delete until I delete it" that stuff will disappear and be gone and unless you catch it and reinstate it soon enough from the deleted files it might be gone and then you will have to find it or re-record it or something.
These are some of the reasons I like TIVO.
However, mostly people above 35 or 40 like Tivo because it isn't cheap and cable tv isn't cheap so if you are a young person maybe a better investment might be something like a Roku that runs netflix or Amazon Prime or Hulu or others on your TV set or Flat Screen from your WIFI so you don't have any cable bills but about 9 bucks a month for Netflix or about 85 dollars a year for Amazon Prime or something like that.
