Here is the paradox as I see it. It is generally known among people in the Internet and computer industry and telecommunications industry that whether the U.S. collects phone and other information on people that countries like China and Russia are going to take whatever they want.
For example, out of Russia comes people who every day steal American Social Security numbers, credit card numbers etc. as well as phone information and tap phones if they want to. This is also done by China as well.
So, here is the paradox: China and Russia and whatever country can afford to do this and wants to is going to likely have digital recordings of every phone conversation that they want to made in the U.S. and around the world and there is nothing that is going to stop them doing this.
So, in a certain sense it doesn't really matter whether the NSA is collecting this information or not because other countries ARE going to do this whether we do this as a nation or not.
In addition to this other countries are very corrupt in a variety of ways. So, this information is bought and sold to the highest bidder or bidders around the world. This likely happens through the NSA to by rogue agents working inside the NSA.
So, if all our phones aren't bugged by NSA then at least it is one less source for criminals and others to have all our infomration.
