I have found this to be more and more true (at least here in California) as Muslim Terrorism grows since the 1960s. However, I have noticed this anti-religious sentiment becoming more extreme since around 1990.
For me, after being raised a Christian Mystic and studying many religions ever since I understand the logic of this. It goes something like this: "IF religions make people crazy enough to become mass murderers then I'm not going to be involved in ANY religion."
This is especially true of children in California going to public or secular private schools. The problem with this then becomes when something awful happens in their lives they turn to anti-depressants, illegal drugs, alcohol etc.
Because only some kind of spirituality or spiritual belief allows people go go through some things (like the death of a loved one) and come out the other side a whole person.
If you don't have some kind of mechanism to survive your own death or the deaths or suffering of others how are you going to cope with serious things happening in your life?
So, I'm not saying you have to belong to a religion or go to church every day. But, how are you going to cope with the really difficult things when they happen to you.
When I was 8 my cousin died in an auto accident at age 16. Then at 29 my grandmother died who helped raise me. Then my father died when I was 37. Then my aunt died a few years later. Then in 2008 another Aunt, my father in law, my mother and a cousin all died the same year. I wondered how I and my wife could survive losing our last parent the same year. But, we did.
So, without some kind of spirituality or religion how are you going to survive all these deaths in your life that are completely inevitable if you live long enough?
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
