- No one can gainsay the brilliance of the international architecture that Harry Truman and his Wise Men created, ... of European nationalism that created the carnage ...The second policy question, on overseas alliances, also rests on shaky ground. No one can gainsay the brilliance of the international architecture that Harry Truman and his Wise Men created, but it rested on two assumptions that may be out of date: the threat of communism and the scourge of European nationalism that created the carnage of the 20th century. There was a real fear of German militarism; even the Germans seemed to fear it. That the U.S. would protect Germany and the rest of Europe seemed an elegant solution–and it was, so long as the threat came from Russia. But the threat now is the tide of immigrants coming from the Middle East. It is fair to ask: Shouldn’t the Europeans spend more on their own defense? Shouldn’t they take a more active role in solving the Syrian crisis? Shouldn’t their militaries be protecting their borders? America’s inability to conduct land wars against militant Islam is manifest. (And perhaps the Europeans should do more to protect themselves against Russian jingoism as well.)end quoteThis paragraph from Klein's article may demonstrate quite concisely why Trump voters voted for Trump in the first place. They were tired of American dollars going overseas to fight in battles we could never win instead of going into our own infrastructure and towards keeping our factories and jobs here in the United States. So, even though Democrats are harping on human rights which are also important, Trump voters may be saying "Hey! We don't even have a job! We can't worry about human rights if we are starving to death! We need jobs and our infrastructure here built up once again! So, this might be what Human rights Activists who Trump voters just think of as elitists need to understand about Trump voters. It's not that Trump can really do all these things. However, if you better understand WHY they voted for him and that they had good reasons to do so then it makes more sense in this context. However, without human rights we all could be just machine gunned one day by a Trump administration that doesn't believe in Free speech, a Free Press or demonstrations or human rights. So, all these things are important in the overall scheme of our lives. So, understanding that both human rights and jobs and infrastructure are important to the survival and longevity of the United States might be important to everyone's survival not only here in the U.S. but all over the earth.
