- As I thought about this more this actually makes sense because cars and trucks could not only drive sideways but also tires could be going different directions during road hazards like rocks, roots, branches, and ice and snow and mud. This likely gives more surface area on the ground for better traction too. and even for driving across ice thick enough on a lake more tire surface area likely would mean less vehicles going through the ice during the winter in the northern states with many frozen lakes.
