In my own case, realizing that a dualistic path was likely not a good path was key for me.
I realized that if you break all life down into good and bad, everything is white or black, right or wrong, you become judgemental and help participate in the deaths and maimings of many people.
If you are intelligent and intuitive enough to see this, a dualistic path there for is murdering lives all around you in various ways.
I realized that compassion, Right Mindful Compassion, was actually the superior path.
But not idiot compassion. Being compassionate with no intelligence also leads to your own death and the deaths of all around you as well which is why so many die and flounder in dualism too.
This is only logical.
So, you have to be intelligent enough to understand what I'm saying here. Dualism is only useful if you beat the hell out of your 2 year old so he or she doesn't run out the front door into traffic and get killed (and that's all).
Otherwise, it's just counterproductive for any intelligent adult.
So, for me, it took me to age 30 or so to fully realize this, but all the success in my life I realize now has come from Right mindful compassion towards myself and all beings (even animals, birds and insects and fish). Success is about having karma good enough to want to even be alive. And you generate that good karma by the way you treat yourself and all other beings.
This is why I'm still alive and relatively healthy now at age 70.
