When I was in Bodhgaya India in December of 1985 with my family (my older kids were 10, 12 and 14 years old then) I noticed some of the most devout Tibetan buddhists who were very devoted and happy in their lives who didn't necessarily believe in God. IF you approach Buddhism the way Buddha Actually taught his emphasis isn't upon God. He doesn't necessarily say that God or gods don't exist, instead he says that the focus should be on ending the suffering of all mankind instead. So, he is asking people to find ways to end their own suffering by helping every one else stop suffering too. The point is that God or gods may or may not exist but that shouldn't be the emphasis of human existence. Instead he said that the emphasis should be upon ending all suffering in the universe so your energy is focused in a different way.
However, I wouldn't be alive now if I hadn't believed in God from 2 to 15 years old. So, I'm both a mystical Christian in that I believe in God as a direct experience of reality 24 hours a day but I'm also a practicing Tibetan Buddhist too. So, I'm one of the 25% of Buddhists who actually do believe in God and live with him 24 hours a day. So, I'm a mystical Christian Tibetan Buddhist is the way I would put this.

So, I can also see how people who do not believe in God get enlightened too because I've met people like this who are fully enlightened and compassionate people, especially in India, Nepal and California and Oregon.
Note: in December of 1985 I was in Bodhgaya India and we received the Kalachakra initiation along with about 500,000 other people then which is about a 4 day initiation from the Dalai Lama. This greatly changed all our lives ever after this.
