The above article has been read by a lot of people so I thought I would leave a URL here in case you want to read it.
The point is that computers only read: Zeros and ones. If you go back to how I was taught in the 1950s and 1960s when I went to college in 1966 first they said that a 1 is an on switch and a zero is an off switch.
If you look at your light switch on the wall now, if you imagine thousands of switches along your wall instead of just one you begin to see what a computer actually is. It is a row of switches:
An on switch is a 1
An Off Switch is a Zero.
This is actually the basis of all computers.
Then we make each zero and 1 have a meaning.
We do this by doing series of switches to have different meanings. All computer languages have to be based upon theses switches or the languages won't work at all for anything.
In a similar way you could make 1000 switches on your wall do about anything you wanted to also. one switch could turn your TV on. another switch could turn your radio on, another switch could answer your phone etc. So, each switch likewise has a different meaning depending upon what people decide it should mean within a certain computer language. However, at a machine language level there is usually a uniformity so people don't all get confused as to what means what at least in the most basic of languages, computer Machine language or zeros and 1s.
