The 4th and last? Season of Barry began this last month or so and I am amazed by this series about just how complex the character of Barry is and the other really developed Character is Noho Hank who secretly loves Barry too along with Cristobal.
The complexity of characters like Barry and Noho Hank and others are what makes this series riveting in many different ways.
Because I was interested in becoming a psychologist in my 20s and studied for a long time in this direction before I had my son and got married at age 26, the complexity of these characters and how well developed they all are and to some degree even how believable some of this is too makes this series Riveting in many different ways.
It's easy for me to see Barry for who he really is because I find myself to always be a survivor like Barry is. However, war has made Barry a real PTSD Candidate and PTSD manifests in many different ways. For example, the boys I counseled in the 1990s in San Jose had 7 felonies each without a Gun which means they could be robbing people with knives and clubs but were not caught with a gun or because they shot someone with a gun. Here in California if you use a gun or are caught with a gun during a crime you are committing basically they throw away the key and put you in CYA (California Youth Authority) where you will be raped by other boys or men until you wish you were dead no matter what your original sexual preference was.
But, Barry is an interesting case because he is a consummate survivor and I have a lot of respect for people who can survive in life no matter what they have to face.
I see myself in a long line of Survivors which I can easily trace back to my Great Grandfather who was a Captain in the northern Army during the Civil War out of Kansas where my Grandfather was born in the late 1870s.
So, since I am also a survivor but never had to kill anyone I'm very grateful because killing people permanently changes how you function in life.
God graced me with not having to be in the military and kill anyone in this lifetime at least.
But, Barry on many levels for me is believable for someone like Barry who is always a survivor no matter what. I'm like Barry in that I always tend to survive whatever life throws at me, I'm just luckier than him because the only PTSD I have suffered is mostly medical like whooping cough, Concussion and seizures until 15 then 2 divorces (it's like your partner died when you divorce), then burst appendix then a hernia from coughing after laparoscopic surgery caused by the holes they drill into your abdomen and then inflate you with CO2 while they use little robots to try to fix you. I think now mostly they give you antibiotics because of the types of problems I had from this type of surgery instead of operating now. Because I will now have a hernia likely the rest of my life that I have to live with.
So yes, Barry is a survivor and a marine veteran From Afghanistan war and I can relate to that because I'm a survivor too. I'm just lucky enough not to have to have gone to some war and killed people. So, I'm really grateful for that.
If you haven't seen the 4th season yet don't read this next part:
Even Barry becoming a Bible thumper for his son makes sense to me in order to create a type of order in his son's life. It's also interesting that his son's mother in some ways is a component to Barry's psychology.
You can see her slowly becoming someone like Barry in some ways over time in the switch from Victim to Abuser in this series too.
It might be interesting to follow her in her own series of what happens to her next too if anyone was interested in going in that direction.
