This has to be the rainiest weather that I can remember since maybe the late 1990s where a bridge was washed into the sea in I believe 1995 over the Carmel River. If you have ever been there what happened would not have seemed possible then. The Metal and Cement Bridge was moved several miles into the ocean never to be seen or heard of again (except maybe by SCUBA? Divers). The trees and brush and sticks built up and the pressure of the waters as they flooded The Crossroads next to the river in Carmel with about 1 foot of mud which also left Mercedes cars and the like floating in an underground garage beneath a bank with their tail end up (the engines are heavier) was beyond belief at that time.
So, even though it hasn't been like this since then this has to be one of the rainiest years we have seen since the late 1990s and the drought began around 2000 and finally abated the last couple of years now.
Also, people in Big Sur are really suffering because Tourists are not allowed to go there now (only locals) so restaurants had to close and maybe fancy hotels there too. Now Big Sur is blocked on Highway 1 from below Big Sur and now there is a break before the Bixby Bridge heading south at around 17 miles south of Monterey too.
So, people who want to drive to Big Sur on a vacation or Lark aren't being allowed to go there. And the one lane that is open could easily close and fall into the sea with this next rain storm because most roads falling off come from water getting under the roadway and then something big drives over it and the Asphalt all washes into the sea.
So, remember about Big Sur so you are not disappointed as a tourist. However, Local Big Sur Business owners have had a very rough couple of years too.
We have had less flooding this year because they rain hasn't come all at once like in other years. This year since around December it seems like it has been raining every weekend since Christmas (however, it is also true it has rained during the week a lot too. However, at least last weekend and this weekend it will rain starting Friday and lasting through Sunday which is interesting too.
