People died much younger in the 1950s mostly because they were ignorant and wouldn't go to doctors much at all because they didn't trust them. For example, in my church growing up people died at all ages including children and young adults under 30 because they refused to go to a doctor because it was against their religion.
But, what I notice the most is that I still have most of my teeth and one implant and soon another but I didn't know anyone in the 1950s that had all their teeth even at age 40 then. So, teeth likely is the biggest change and diet and exercise is the next biggest change and the next biggest change is people actually study more to stay alive and do more research on what doctors they should go to to actually stay alive now.
Ignorance killed most people in the 1950s when I was a child. This was pretty obvious to me at the time. However, my father was brilliant and so started debating with me about everything by age 8 so I would be good at critical thinking. If I had a premise (no matter what it was) I had to defend it starting with rock N Roll which he called something derogatory at the time in the 1950s.
