The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Thursday for much of interior Northern California including the Sacramento Valley, foothills and Delta.

The watch stretches from southern Stanislaus County and into central Shasta County. It will extend east into southern Placer County and west to the San Pablo Bay.

NWS Sacramento

After a forecast of 99 degrees on Tuesday, Sacramento could have a high of 102 degrees on Wednesday, followed by a high near 99 on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS said the upcoming heat wave could pose a major risk of heat stress or illnesses to people, especially those who work outdoors or animals.

Those who are sensitive to heat should considering testing their air conditioner before the warm weather comes.

Officials urges caution around waterways in their area, which are running fast and cold due to snowmelt.

When warm weather approaches, the NWS offers the following the tips to stay safe in the heat:
•Stay hydrated
•Dress for heat
•Apply sunscreen
•Never leave children or pets in the car
