IF you have a heart problem and Edema it will basically prevent symptoms of edema while you are taking Spironolactone or Eplerenone. However, there is a side affect of spironolactone that many men don't like which is sex is over while taking a full dose of spironolactone basically. When I was taking a full dose I looked at women who were beautiful and said to myself, "Oh. She's beautiful!" But, I had no physical or psychological reactions that a man normally would. This was caused by the effects of taking a full dose of spironolactone.
However, (I didn't ask my doctor about this but did this on my own by the way) while I was trying to switch to Eplerenone which doesn't cause a psychological castration of a man I found out sadly I couldn't take Eplerenone regularly because it caused me to be in constant physical pain and out of it. So, sadly I stopped taking it. But, my son who is a trained Nurse through a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through a California STate University said to me, "You cannot go cold turkey off this kind of drug. That is extremely hard on your body. You have to go off in stages so you don't harm yourself. So, I got the idea of going 1/2 Eplerenone which I did for awhile and then I thought maybe I should go back on Spironolactone with a half tablet too. So, at this point I stopped taking Eplerenone completely. (Also Eplerenone is much more expensive than Spironolactone by the way).
But, this worked incredibly well taking only 1/2 dose (1/2 tablet of Spironolactone every day). It took care of my Edema enough so it isn't a problem AND it allowed me to still have a sexual relationship with my wife which made both her and me very happy. I still haven't told my heart specialist that I'm doing this but this is working great in maintaining my health while allowing me to still be a man instead of something else (at least psychologically). This is working for me. However, everyone has to do what works for them in the end.
