A lot of money gets wasted researching things that aren't true in the first place and 80% to 90% of all the people know this already.
The second more ominous thing about believing in fairy tales (or Horror stories like Fake News) is that people die who are innocent of any wrong doing world wide and in the U.S.
This is why the press here in the U.S. and around the world are terrified of someone like Trump nuking a place just based on some unproven conspiracy theory at some point. However, Nixon was also paranoid in a slightly different way than Trump is and look where that got him.
