I'm 3 hours behind Eastern time here in PDT on the West Coast so likely right now it is about 5 pm there and only 2 pm here PDT. But, I think between 1 and 3 pm ET New Bern at the Neuse River at a park began to flood and the CNN reporter said the Marina and some of the boats were going underwater there already. The reporter said she was almost 6 feet tall and the water by then was up to her knees already in the park next to the river and she showed movies of cars nearby driving in deep water trying to get around that area already. Also, Jennifer Gray Meteorologist for CNN reported that the 13 feet of Storm surge might stay in areas like this up to 30 hours and then there are going to be waves and tides on top of this Storm surge. She mentioned that 13 feet by itself is above the roof of a single story building, so hopefully if you are there in New Bern you have a boat or a boogie board or something to float away on once your single story house is underwater for 30 hours if that happens. Maybe there is a friend where you can paddle to on something that floats that has a 2 or three story building for you to stay alive during the rest of the 30 hours with water this deep all around you.
There is a lot of danger because when the news reported that this storm went down to a Category 2 from a 4 people didn't take it as seriously. But, weather people are saying that is wrong because the storm surges it is presently carrying are still at CAT 4 intensity and people aren't realizing this. And 75% of the people who die in hurricanes die in the flooding and the water often is putrid from sewage or insecticides and other poisons people keep in their garages or back yards. Another danger is fallen power lines electrifying water when you don't expect it so people are electrocuted. There would be no sign of danger of this for most people not familiar with power lines either. Once a line has dropped it sparks hitting the water but after that there might be no sign that the water there is a death trap if anyone gets near. So, when people get into the water there they would be knocked unconscious and then would drown.
