I was pretty upset when I realized how many people got sick or even died from Covid because of the fires last year

It turns out what smoke does to your lungs reduces your immune system and makes you more suceptible to getting Covid in the first place no matter what age you are. So, this likely would be really terrible for young firefighters who didn't know this about what the smoke from fires does to your immune system. If we weren't in a pandemic it wouldn't be costing so many lives of young and old.

So, if you aren't making a living fighting fires then moving as far away from the smoke as possible will lessen your chances of getting Covid more easily by being exposed to what smoke actually does to your lungs the longer you are breathing really smoky are in places like Lake Tahoe form the Caldor and Tamarack fires and further north a little from the Dixie fires.

The statement regarding 2020 fires was something like: "Thousands of people got covid the summer of 2020 because of the Fires in California and Hundreds died because they got covid because of the fires."

This was not limited to fires in California by the way but all the fires in the westerns states caused people to get Covid (for a variety of reasons) and hundreds died because of getting Covid from the fires.

So, I guess what I'm saying here is the same thing is happening here to firefighters, people evacuated people living downwind of the fires who have to breathe too much smoke and whose lungs are weakened in various ways which makes them more susceptible to getting covid in the first place.

I think you will find people hit by Ida also especially if they had to evacuate their safe homes for any reason will also be more susceptible to getting covid or even dying  this summer too.
