The one child per family rule was a Social Disaster for China from 1980 until 2015

 How did it become a disaster?

When you can have only one child in that culture you are going to have a boy. So, if people had girls often they drowned them secretly and never registered the female child. Then when everyone grew up there were literally NO female children at all (except in rare instances where richer people might have preferred a girl over a boy because they might be nicer to deal with growing up.

Then as adults there were no females at all for middle class and below men. So, outside of going to whorehouses there was no family for these men ever. No wife, no children. Nothing! Only the richest men who could literally buy a wife from a poorer family could ever have a wife and children. This drove many men and women insane from this extreme social problem. This is why they stopped the one child policy in 2015 because it had completely destroyed the family fabric of Chinese society from the middle class down throughout China from 1980 until 2015.

However, they did succeed in making those that survived all this more wealthy by not overpopulating their country into extinction and poverty completely.
