Though China's one child policy led to suicides, infanticide of female children and other psychological problems it also led to great wealth among those who survived it

So, there are many ways to look at China's one child policy from 1980 until 2015. One view would be from a western standpoint: "This is horrific in the damage done to society and families in China!" This is true. However, from a purely pragmatic point of view it also brought great wealth to those who survived this prevention of births which limited families to one child basically universally.

Would something like this work in Europe or the U.S. or Canada? Probably not. Was it successful? It was horrific sociologically. However, it did reduce the general population like the government wanted it too.

But, since it wouldn't work at all for a variety of reasons in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia or places like New Zealand, another way to limit births would need to be found.

So, the preferred method was to allow the mothers to have abortions rather than their children starving to death or infanticide being the only viable way forward for these mothers. And even then many would go to jail for infanticide. I think if Roe V. Wade is overturned I think you will find at least one dead baby per day here in the U.S. as a direct result of Roe V. Wade being overturned. And likely many more than that.
