the United Nations emergency relief coordinator warned the death toll could double to 50,000

 It seems unfeasible that this could and is likely happening but I think it's also important to remember that in 1939 a similar size earthquake killed 300,000 people in Turkey too. So, on one level that ONLY 50,000 are dying shows something about better building codes than then when a similar earthquake only kills 50,000 instead of 300,000 like before in 1939.
