Here might be some of the questions you might ask yourself when sitting down to write:
What is it I'm writing about?
Is this something that will be useful to me or others?
Or is it just a playful exercise?
It might be easy to define like it's a:
Mystery
Science Fiction
Historical Fact
But, beyond that what are you trying to say about whatever it is you are writing about?
So, clarity of purpose helps before writing anything.
However, it is also true that when I used to write the lyrics to songs more, how I might start was to get on my guitar and go into a sort of spiritual or religious Trance experience with three cords like f, C, and G for example, or D, A, and G. And I would find myself beginning to write lyrics for a song as I played theses sets of cords or others.
Though I also wrote songs while playing piano or keyboards or an organ or synthesizer too, I found it much easier for me to write songs while playing cords on a guitar while I sang along with the cords.
If I was on the piano for example, I might start out with the very easy to play "Heart and Soul" and then do variations of this in the key of C.
I found when you don't have to play sharps and flats and have everything in the key of C it was much easier to write songs that way.
So, some of my earliest songs I wrote were actually variations of the cording on "Heart and Soul" so it had a similar left hand cording but different orders of notes in the key of C.
This was the easiest way to write a song on the piano for me.
But, then my father past away in 1985 and I stopped playing music so much and seldom played much after that simply because I couldn't deal with my emotions very well after my father died. So, even though my mother lived until 2008 I seldom played unless my mother and I was singing something together while I accompanied us on piano. So, sometimes from 1985 until around 2000 or so my mother and I would still sing together especially singing Christmas Carols at Christmas time with our family.
But, it's also true that instead of writing songs and lyrics I moved into writing prose more after I developed a writing style that I like when I started writing about Arcane in 1980.
