It actually makes sense why women aren't having as many children as before. Biggest reason is education and understanding that they have a right NOT to get pregnant and go bankrupt raising children if they don't want to. So, I would say the biggest factor is women becoming more educated with more choices worldwide now.
But, there are also local things like for example, in countries like Japan, a wife and mother is more of the husband's slave than anything else and this might also be true in countries like China as well.
So, getting educated and getting your own career gives a woman much more freedom than before all over the world. Also, having a child now is dangerous economically. I don't even know if I would attempt having a family as a young person in these economic dynamics because if you look at most people below 35 years of age they are in bad straights now economically, whether it is because they have student loans that are putting them under financially or because they didn't go to college and can barely make ends meet. And of course there are people who are having both of these problems simultaneously who took a non-lucrative major and so have student loans without the money to pay for those Loans. I have met many people my age like this along the way too.
This is why I told my son if he actually got his bachelor of Science degree that we would pay off his Student loans, which were not that bad because he had only borrowed about 40,000 dollars. However, I have met people who even in their 50s still owe 90,000 dollars or more in student loans because they got master's degrees.
So, all these many many factors contribute to it being cost prohibitive for most people to have children these days. In most countries having children equates with economic misery in an extreme way now.
