At first it was sunny yesterday but then across the valley the fog came in so it was sunny where we are and foggy across from us which was interesting. Today the fog is completely here as of 11 am still which means it may or may not burn off today in the afternoon. I hope this isn't some indicator of a further extension of the "June Glooms" which in past years has begun starting in April or May. Has it moved this year to March?
Hard to say this early because up and down the coast it has been much foggier earlier each year than the last for several years now which seems to be also a part of the Tornadoes and Tropical Storms which are sort of new to California. At least we got above average rain this year so we should be good water wise until the fall or later.
Last year the "June Glooms" of fog began in the SF bay area in April or May and went on pretty much until September or October. Even though this keeps the coast green somewhat and keeps the temperatures below 100 degrees and usually lower than 80 or even 70 during the summer months it is nice to see the sun sometimes too, especially during the summers. I remember growing up in Los Angeles in Glendale from 1956 to 1969 and it being 100 or 110 a lot there with full sun (and smog then too) during this time. I think most of that time we had an air conditioner at least in one room to stay cool during a lot of this time. However, air conditioners in houses and cars were a relatively new thing then and I remember driving from Santa Fe to Los Angeles in over 110 to 115 degree heat with no air conditioner. To make sure the radiator didn't boil over then we had a canvas bag full of water in case we boiled over hanging over the end of the hood where the radiator was in front. The canvas bag kept the water cool so it didn't get warm which was interesting too. Then also we had wind wings on a car to get more outside air into it when it was really hot out and often I used spray bottles of water as a child to keep from getting heat stroke traveling in temperatures between 110 and 120 degrees then. I usually remember having a headache most of the time when we did this. But, this was expected then in children traveling in the heat during this time.
