There has been snow in the mountains above San Jose and snow in the mountains above Big Sur which likely made the fall off of part of the road to Big Sur worse for people trying to get into Big Sur and out to places like Monterey and other locations to the north of Big Sur. However, the Rain storm could make the road situation worse because usually when a road falls into the ocean it is caused by rain undermining a paved road and then too heavy of a vehicle drives over it and the roads collapses (hopefully not when a big truck or school bus that is loaded drives over this weakened section. They are already paving further towards the mountains and away from the ocean side Cliffs where the road is disappearing into the ocean little by little.
So, hail a lot fell locally and I was at a Costco and I got what I was buying there but the last 1/2 block to my 4wd Truck it cloudbursted on me but luckily I was wearing a hooded rain jacket so I just put the hood up and my hair didn't even really get wet. Then the cloud burst continued until I got on the main 4 lane highway and drivers not used to driving in the rain much were a little scary.
I was okay because I'm used to driving in rain and snow and even heavy fog living along the coast and also living in the snow in Mt. Shasta a lot between 1976 off an on until 1992 which was the last time i lived there full time.
So, there have been many closed roads simply because the snow fell as low as 1000 to 2000 feet. Not a lot but enough to make cars and trucks leave the roads if they didn't know that the ice or hail or snow was there. So, many roads closed off and on today and likely it is much worse tonight. Presently it is only 46 where I live on the coast which is really unusually cold for April here on the coast. You would expect even the night time lows to be above 48 or 50 this time of year. But, this year like last year is a very unusual year weather wise.
