For me, the biggest surprise which is way beyond any culture shock that I experienced in Nepal and India at the time was to realize how people saw spirituality and religion in India and Nepal.
In the U.S. as I grew up here it was about Belief more than anything else and because you were free to believe whatever you wanted to (at least theoretically it was an ideal) the way people view religions and beliefs in God or a higher power is much different than what I learned about in India and Nepal.
What amazed me was that spirituality and sometimes even religion was seen as a technology, a spiritual technology based upon compassion towards all life in the universe.
I could see how in the U.S. this general lack of compassion for all beings in the universe was lacking for the most part in American general spirituality and religion.
For me, seeing that India and Nepal tended to see spirituality as a technology that worked only if someone had compassion for all life in the universe was a revelation to me at the time.
It has changed deeply how I now see spirituality and religion in general on earth.
The point of their point of view is that without compassion for all life in the universe it is dangerous to be a conscious part of this spiritual technology.
So, until you learn somehow compassion for all beings in the universe you are a danger to the entire rest of the planet. So, unless you have compassion for all life in the universe first, many of these religions in Asia won't teach you the most powerful stuff until you demonstrate to them your compassion for everyone and everything. Because if they did they would karmically become responsible for either your death or the deaths of others.
It's a lot like not giving the keys to a race car to a 5 year old. Same thing.
The point of this is if you don't do this not only will you die but people around you will die too from this technology.
So, you have to be like a parent or a grandparent to all mankind and all life on earth not to die from the spiritual technology all around us.
I think: "May the force be with you" from Stars Wars might be important for people to understand.
However, the primary thing you need to have is not the technology but the compassion for all life in the universe if you want to stay alive understanding and applying Spiritual technology.
This is what I was the most surprised about in 1985 and 1986 to discover these facts about what I think I want to call "Spiritual Technology" because religion doesn't usually teach about this in a very useful way here in the U.S. because religion was built (European Religion) was built by Kings and Queens in order to Control the thoughts and actions of the masses. When you start from there everyone from Europe in the Christian religion then and now is basically a slave to their governments and churches right or wrong.
So, learning all these things changed how I saw the world ever after this.
So, it is sort of like what Jesus said, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's."
The point being our relationship should be with God rather than any Government first, according to Jesus.
