sneaker wave rescues in California this week

I had thought that the viral video of the boy being rescued from sneaker waves was in Southern California. So, i was surprised it was at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz instead. We also this week had sneaker waves where I live on the coast near Santa Cruz, California. also, there is Maverick's beach north of Santa Cruz where waves 10 to 20 feet or more are common there too.

However, sneaker waves are often the worst for tourists who have not yet almost died from them themselves like many locals have through the years. The problem with Sneaker waves is that they are mostly unexpected and greatly change things when they hit.

I was with friends on the beach and realized there was one area not safe for me to go to because they were hitting periodically. Even after I sat down with my feet in the sand and sitting on a nearby rock the water came up to my ankles or beyond even though I was sitting at least 50 feet from the previous wave breaking on the shore. So, you can see how people are getting sucked out just standing on the shore not watching when the big ones come in periodically and are shocked by suddenly being pulled into the water when nothing was there before. And survival in Northern California waters is iffy because of the water temperatures even in summer.

Even now where i live the ocean temperatures are low:

Ocean temperatures locally are currently around 58.6°F to 59°F (14.8°C), which is slightly above the typical late-July average of 57.9°F. [1, 2]

So, you might only last about 1/2 hour in the ocean in these temperatures even this time of year before getting hypothermia if you aren't wearing a wet suit like Surfers wear this far north in California.

If you get hypothermia you will begin to hallucinate and then your likelihood of survival is smaller by the minute because of this. Because you will no longer be rational or able to make rational decisions at this point.

Strong swells and sneaker waves triggered over 34 rescues in Santa Cruz and dozens more along the California coast this week, highlighted by a viral rescue of a 10-year-old boy by a 16-year-old lifeguard at Seabright State Beach.

Rescue and Incident Details
  • Seabright Beach Rescue: A 10-year-old boy was swept into the pounding surf by a sudden sneaker wave on Saturday afternoon, July 25.
  • Heroic Response: A 16-year-old lifeguard jumped into the heavy whitewater and rip currents, backed by a second lifeguard and bystanders, to pull the child to safety.
  • County-wide Totals: State park lifeguards reported at least 34 rescues in the Santa Cruz area alone as unsuspecting beachgoers were overwhelmed by the sudden swells.
Current Warnings and Safety
  • Active Advisories: The National Weather Service extended a Beach Hazards Statement for dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves along the Pacific coast—covering Sonoma down to Monterey counties—through Saturday, August 1, 2026.
  • Wave Heights: Breaking waves are forecasted to reach 6 to 12 feet on vulnerable south- and southwest-facing beaches.
  • Safety Rules: Officials urge visitors to stay out of the water, avoid rocks and jetties, and never turn their back on the ocean.
If you plan to visit the coast this week, let me know which specific beach or region you are heading to so I can share local hazard conditions and safety recommendations.
