The loft in our A-Frame on Mt. Shasta

 Though we built this A-Frame on our 2 1/2 acres with my father and mother's help what I remember most about this cabin right now was how cozy the large loft was with the beautiful view of Mt. Shasta. So, at the head of my then wife and my bed was all glass on one of the two vertical flat sides of the house that were not sloped. The other two sides were sloped steeply to shed the 7 feet of snow or more that could fall there then. And there have been at least 12 feet of snow there until june or July only a couple of years ago too. So, I suppose this can still happen there too which is another reason to have an A-Frame at 4000 feet where it can still do this so your roof doesn't collapse in case you are not there to shovel it off.

However, what I was remembering is how we left our Aladdin Kerosene Lamp Downstairs because it would likely have been to dangerous to have it upstairs at that time. But, what we read with was a Candle Lantern with a reflector that you can buy that doubles the light. So, though we didn't have any electricity there then because we were 10 miles from the nearest Gas station or store we had this amazing experience of home schooling our children for 5 years living there and each morning waking up looking at that Glorious mountain view right at our heads looking out the window towards MT. Shasta then.

It was also very nice and cozy up there especially in the winters with snow outside a lot and we had to keep our then 1974 International harvester Scout II parked a couple of miles away so we would haul food and store goods by pulling them in a Toboggan the mile or two from where we could park our 4 wheel drive then. A neighbor had a snow plow but I never invested in one because I thought it was too expensive because we had kids to raise that were then 5, 6 and 8 years old when we moved to this house we built.

The summer we moved there so we could build the house with my parents and friends I built a wood shed with a loft and covered it with Aluminum siding and roofing from a hanger that had burned down at Weed Airport out past Weed the town on Interstate 5. I used wood from a few dead trees on my land to build this and then built a loft so we had a place to sleep while building our house. Also, then we sold our VW 1971 Westfalia Camper van to buy plywood and wood to build our A-Frame too.

But, waking up each morning seeing Mt. Shasta there out our loft window on that side of the house always made the day go right somehow. Some memories are amazing and they last a lifetime. We built our house the summer of 1980 along with my parents and friends who lived in the Mt. Shasta area then.
