Gene Chandler (born Eugene Dixon, July 6, 1937) nicknamed "The Duke of Earl" or simply "The Duke", is an African-American singer, songwriter, music producer and ...

In the very early 1960s (1962) when this came out it was one of the most popular songs then. I was young then and didn't understand this sort of "Civil Rights" kind of subtle or not so subtle stance way before the Civil Rights Bill in 1964. In fact, I was only 14 then in 1962 and really didn't even know that Chandler was an African American man. (no internet then) to easily find out such things unless you saw a performance on TV live.

I only knew I loved this song as it really 'Sent me" then and still "Sends me" now. I often played it on a transistor radio when it was played by either KFWB or KRLA then on AM.

Then there was "Wolfman Jack" who often played the "Top 40" especially weekends on the radio.
