One day around 2000 the Secretary of Defense of Saudi Arabia said to a British official something like (paraphrazed): "One day the Shias are going to upset the Sunnis so much that it will be the end of them."
This year this statement may be starting to become prophetic because of Syria. Hezbollah cannot hold Back ISIS, Al Nusra or the now aligned Anti-Assad forces aided now by Turkey and Saudi Arabia in Syria.
Assad likely will fall in the coming year or two because of this barring aid from Iran. Russia is pulling all it's advisors out of Syria because Sanctions are killing Russia financially because 40% of the governmental income is derived from the price of oil which is too low to keep Russia on an even keel financially.
So, because of the Russian withdrawal from Syria and because 100 new ISIS soldiers show up every day from the 1.1 billion Sunni Muslims around the world, the 165 million only Shia Muslims in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon and scattered throughout the middle east may be in trouble.
It's not that they will go extinct because there are large groups of Shia Muslims in Europe and the U.S. and Canada. But in the Middle East Shia Muslims likely will go extinct wherever ISIS GOES.(along with all Christians, Yazidis, and secular people who might not have a religion at all).
And Hezbollah cannot compete with 100 new ISIS Soldiers coming from around the world every day to join and die with ISIS.
So, you can see the problem.
However, if ISIS kills all Alawite shia Muslims in a massacre in Syria this is likely millions of people.
Can the world stand by and watch this happen and still feel civilized?
