I was sitting next to a lady who started to talk with me and my wife at a showing of Jurassic World the other day and she mentioned she had been a Kung Fu martial arts instructor a lot of her life and was presently a hair dresser at her present age of 63. She mentioned she had been to the Griffith Park Love ins and I told her I went to the 1969 Love In there with Buffy St. Marie and the Youngbloods (The flying burrito brothers) who sang "When you come home to San Francisco, better wear a flower in your hair." But, then I told her the cops came because there likely was no permit for this performance and when it ended they beat up a lot of people who were out of it and couldn't run or defend themselves with billy clubs. I made sure I was okay to run along with my friends so we were okay when it ended. But, many were not okay.
Love Ins were usually free concerts for everyone given at mostly parks around the U.S. then. So, big band names would donate time and energy to setting up a stage usually for an event like this. But often no permits were obtained for these events so the police showed up and hurt people who were out of it for the concert. There was always a lot of music and dancing and carrying on. So, for people who like to listen to good music these were some of the most amazing (but also very dangerous if the cops showed up like at the one I went to).
Note: Griffith Park is a huge park in the Center of Los Angeles on a range of hills sort of like a mountainous Central Park like they have in New York.
In regard to all Love Ins: responsible people survived these kinds of events, but always some did not, just like in concerts people go to today there are always some people that overdo and they are left mentally or physically incapacitated or dead. So, to think that going to a concert was danger free even then was to be very naive indeed. However, for most people these events were very beautiful in that all kinds of people from various cultures got together without fighting.
