For me, I was about 22 years old and taking a course in College Called, "Cultural Anthropology". One of the definitions for a shaman went something like this: "A shaman is someone who has died psychologically but their body still lives". I realized this was why I could walk in the world of the living and in the world of the dead equally. It was because I died many times psychologically from Whooping Cough (when I had to turn blue and pass out many times and give into it to survive it) and I had to die many times from Childhood epilepsy because each seizure for me was sort of like being murdered. Someone in their 30s likely could not survive these sorts of things because it is the same terror as being murdered.
However, when I invoked God to live in my body with me at age 15 my seizures stopped immediately, and my physical appearance completely changed within 3 months and girls started chasing me. So, I knew God had come into my body and that this was why I looked handsome and why girls were chasing me around.
However, the path to this was a path of dying so many times psychologically that I begged God to live in my body with me before I died for real. And he did. But, this too, was pretty terrifying until I got to be about 30 years old and could learn to deal with constant supernatural events happening within and around me all the time 24 hours a day.
So, when Old Testament prophets talk about their experiences with God I understand how intense all this stuff really is. And what Jesus says also makes a lot of sense in this context too.
