- Until the oldest was 12 and wanted to return to school. We lived remotely (10 miles from the nearest small town or gas station at 4000 feet in an A-Frame house we built outselves so the snow couldn't collapse the roof if we weren't there at the time during the winter on the side of Mt. Shasta, with a spring for water and often winters in the 1980s brought 7 feet of snow there at one time during each winter from 1980 to 1985.
- We found the independent study course and easy outline to follow for our children. We had courses (kindergarten, 1st and 4th grade to start with so we had less lesson plans because the lesson plans could be passed down somewhat to the younger children from the oldest.
- At the time I didn't know my son was dyslexic but also had an IQ of 150. He was the 5 year old when we started with the course of study. He helped teach himself because he was interested in Dungeons and Dragons at that time. So, I bought him books he liked about this with a lot of pictures and he would come to me and ask what a picture was and I would tell him and spell the name out for him. This was how he familiarized himself with words he wanted to learn. So, for him, Dungeons and dragons and throwing dice playing role playing games was a big part of how he chose to learn to read at that time. The other two (a boy and a girl were both artists) so this was instrumental to their learning as well especially in doing reports on various subjects. My stepson was the oldest and he was interested in Birding with his Grandmother through the Audobon Society and even now at 45 he is interested in this even though he is now a Fire Captain and travels all over the world taking pictures of rare birds and wild animals like Lions and Tigers in the wilds on his vacations with his wife who is a nurse all over the world. My Step daughter is now a lawyer in Oregon and my son is a teacher overseas with his wife and child. All three are married and doing well.
- Part of what was good for us was My wife had time to teach them and had an Early Childhood education certification already. I had been to a lot of college too so I could also step in and help because of my education in various different directions as well. So, between the two of us with the independent study materials and consulting with Accredited teachers from Oak Meadow School our children did quite well on this program. It helped them all become self starters in their lives and go directions in their lives personally interesting to them by them deciding what they wanted to be interested in and study in their lives with joy.
- That is the single most important thing for children to develop a love of learning which often is killed by public schools. Once you destroy the love of learning through public schools kids often are not salvageable ever. But, if you can foster a love of learning they continue learning things they are interested in for a lifetime of joy of learning. Education even self education is the basis to all success in life. If you follow your passion you likely are going to be a success.
- If not, maybe not. So, more than anything else foster a love of learning in your children so they have amazing lives.
