A heat wave last week in Quebec, Canada, killed an estimated 91 people, authorities say.
Canadian health officials said the majority of deaths occurred in Montreal as heat indexes climbed to more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. New figures show that 53 people were killed in the city, according to The Star.
Most of the dead were men living alone, people over the age of 60, those suffering from chronic illnesses or mental health disorders, the Montreal Regional Public Health Department reports. Many had no air conditioning.
The majority of the deaths occurred in heat islands, according to an official report. These heat islands are often warmer than other locations in a given area due to industrial growth, additional blacktop or dark buildings.
The situation became so dire that a funeral home was transformed into a makeshift morgue, officials said.
