WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden said Friday that former President Donald Trump should no longer receive classified intelligence briefings because of his “erratic behavior.”

“There is no need for him to have the intelligence briefings,” Biden said on the CBS Evening News With Norah O’Donnell. “What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”

Former presidents are frequently given routine intelligence briefings and access to classified materials after they leave office. But some Democratic lawmakers have questioned whether Trump should continue to receive the reports, arguing he could pose a national security risk.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said earlier this week that the issue of granting Trump intelligence briefings was "something that is under review."

Pressed by O’Donnell on why Trump should no longer receive the briefings, Biden cited Trump’s “erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection” at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Biden said he would "rather not speculate out loud" when asked what he feared might happen if Trump is allowed to continue receiving the briefings.

On the subject of Trump's upcoming impeachment trial, Biden, who served 36 years in the Senate, declined to say whether he would vote to convict Trump if he were still in the Senate.

“Look, I ran like hell to defeat him because I thought he was unfit to be president,” Biden said. “I’ve watched what everybody else watched, what happened when that crew invaded the United States Congress. But, I’m not in the Senate now. I’ll let the Senate make that decision.”

Separately, Biden conceded that a proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour is unlikely to remain in the $1.9 trillion COVID-relief package that he is asking Congress to approve.

“Apparently, that’s not going to occur,” he said.

Biden called for raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour as a candidate for president and included the increase in his $1.9 trillion COVID-relief plan. Congressional Republicans, however, have raised objections to raising the minimum wage.

Biden said he still believes the minimum wage should be raised and is prepared to negotiate on a separate proposal to boost it to $15 per hour.

"Look, no one should work 40 hours a week and live below the poverty wage," he said. "And if you're making less than $15 an hour, you're living below the poverty wage."

CBS' full interview with Biden will air before the Super Bowl on Sunday. The network broadcast portions of it on Friday.
