The joy of being self sufficient

Buying land and building your own home (in the 1960s through about 1990) was a great way to reduce your cost of living. Also, if you build a home somewhere beautiful often your property values were going to soar over time and so many people over the years after finding wonderful property and building their dream homes were able to retire often with the money that their beautiful property and house that they had built brought them. However, this sort of thing is tricky because if you sell your wonderful place you no longer have all the advantages of your wonderful place.

So, often selling "The Goose that laid golden eggs for you" end your life. I have seen this more than once.

So, often keeping your property and renting it out or something like this would be a better idea than selling your wonderful home and land. In this way if you have decent tenants you get your cake and eat it too.

The other advantage of have 2 1/2 acres or more of land is that you can grow your own food organically. not everyone wants to do this but it will tend to lengthen your lives 25 to 50 years because often people are much happier and healthier doing this as long as they have a good water supply and good water rights where they own their land.

Another thing, if you build your own home often there is no mortgage so this can allow people to own their own businesses and travel the world and see the whole place rather than being imprisoned by a mortgage you ONLY are paying property taxes and that's all. You aren't paying rent to anyone after you have paid off your land and materials you built your home with.

So, if you own your own business (you decide when you work and when you take time off to travel the world) and then if you also own your own land and home (and it's all paid for) because you built it yourself and have no mortgage (you can see the world) and maybe take off months at a time since you are never paying rent or a mortgage to anyone.

So, these are some of the joys of being completely self sufficient. However, it isn't for everyone because unless you have the mental skills and physical skills to do all this successfully then it won't work for you.

So, be sure of who you are before you embark on this kind of thing because it obviously isn't for everyone.

It helps to have some college and be old enough to (wear a lot of hats) as a business owner and landowner to pull all this off year after year. And then your wife and kids have to want to be there too or there will be dissention in the ranks.

So, it sounds great but there are a lot of pieces to make it all work for you so everyone is happy doing this.
