Artificial intelligence systems more apt to fail t...
Though AI is also used in passenger plane autopilots at least there are REAL pilots backing them up in emergencies (as long as the gauges are functional so pilots can have some idea what is actually happening).
However, in a driverless car this might be different if all the passengers cannot drive and there is no wheel or pedals or gauges or shifter or even a brake pedal.
So, if AI is more apt to fail than to destroy this must be taken into consideration. All one would need is a bump that jars loose one necessary connection electrically to cause the vehicle to fail.
So, imagine this vehicle is entering a freeway. Then there is a road hazard like a piece of cement that falls from a truck in front of this vehicle. The vehicle cannot avoid this obstacle and so the jarring causes a disconnection in a primary Processor driving the vehicle so the processor still functions but is now no longer connected to the driving mechanisms of the car.
The question then becomes: "If this car suddenly stops or coasts to a stop in the middle of the freeway with people and trucks and cars whizzing by at 70 to 80 miles per hour, how many people are going to die in this situation along with the passengers in the driverless car?
Now, imagine every car or maybe 75% of them are driverless or at least no human driver is presently driving them in 50% of the driverless cars.
Now what happens as driverless cars can stop relflexively much much quicker than humans can. Would the driverless cars then cause more accidents because humans reflexes aren't as quick as the driverless operating systems are?
By the way I witnessed an accident like this where a brand new VW Rabbit was behind a truck where a piece of reinforced concrete fell off the truck and the Rabbit could not avoid it because of speed and traffic. It drove the engine of the VW Rabbit up through the hood of the car. No one died because humans were in charge but there were some very unhappy people involved.
