Truism

Being kind to yourself and others is likely the most important thing you can do during your lives.
Why is this?

Because we don't have control of what others do or say to us but we do have control of what we do or say to others and ourselves.

So, from this aware point of view what others do or say to themselves or others including us really is not important in the overall scheme of the universe. The only thing that is important is what we do or say to ourselves and to others.

We have control of what we do or say to others and ourselves so by our example others can learn or not.

However, this doesn't mean to make yourself vulnerable to others either. One should find ways to stay alive and sane first.

However, once one has managed to find a way to stay alive and sane then practicing kindness to oneself and others is very important because everything that happens to us is based upon this once we create safety in our lives. In fact, this is also important at all points and to realize all this is extremely powerful in it's affect on our lives and all those around us on into the future whether we are alive or dead at that point.

Just look what beings like Jesus and Buddha did by practicing this every day for a lifetime or as long as they lived here on earth. Here it is 2500 years or more since Buddha left us and over 2000 years since Jesus and look at the good they did while alive and now 2000 to 2500 years later and look at the billions of lives they changed permanently with their ideas and practices.
