I'm wondering if melanoma rates are partly caused by less protection from Cosmic rays from our magnetosphere. I do know that in many places on earth the magnetosphere is now from zero to 5 to 10% of what it was up until 2000 AD. So, this could be part of the cause of a rise in melanomas. Also, younger people often think they are immortal or people get a tan on tanning beds and damage their skin. So, all these factors are changing how many people get melanomas I'm thinking.
