Landslides, floods kill four people; scores displaced

Jul 19, 2018-Landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains at least killed four people, injured six others and displaced scores of families in Gorkha, Parbat and Baglung and Darchula districts on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
In Gorkha, three people perished after a landslide buried a house at Andheri in Sahid Lakhan Rural Municipality-6 on Wednesday morning.
Saru Kunwar, 20, her eight-month-old baby Unique and her sister Prabina, 10, died in the incident.
Chief District Officer Narayan Bhattarai said doctors from the District Hospital performed autopsies on the bodies before they were handed over to the family.
The landslide has also left seven other houses in the settlement at high risk.
In Parbat, a teenager died when a landslide swept away a house at Bareneta of Jaljala Rural Municipality-8 on Tuesday night. Police said Bikas Pariyar,16, died in the disaster. His body was recovered on Wednesday morning. Thirteen other homes in the settlement were damaged.
Eight families residing near Bareneta were displaced after their homes were damaged due to the erosion caused by the rain-swollen Lasti stream.
Police said six people were injured while fleeing the area.
In Kushma Municipality-11 of the district, a man died after he was swept away by the rain-swollen Gangate stream on Wednesday. Police said Maniram BK died while crossing the flooded stream.
In Baglung, a landslide damaged 27 houses, a primary health centre and a mill
at Burtibang Bazaar Dhorpatan Municipality-1on Tuesday night.
No casualties were reported in the landslide that erupted from the recently constructed rural road.
Locals said the landslide damaged nearly 500-metre section of the road.
53 families displaced in Darchula
As many as 53 families have been displaced due to floods and landslides in Naugad Rural Municipality, Darchula, in the past one week. Floods and landslides have destroyed at least six homes and rendered many others uninhabitable, said Prem Singh Dhami, the chairman of the rural municipality.
