Here's the word: Reliability
In a pinch it is always going to work for you and not break down. I'm not sure any other truck can be presently as dependable as most Tundra's are.
When my father bought trucks he usually bought a Ford Truck and had two of them. He bought a 1968 with I believe a 360 cubic inch engine and it was really fast. Then he bought a 1975 new too and it had so much smog stuff on it then that it was kind of gutless even though it also had a 360 cubic inch engine too.
However, then in 1976 I wanted a small truck for my work and life and at first bought a 1976 Datsun (now called Nissan). This was a really great truck except when I broke up with my first wife in 1977 I gave her the truck so she would have a vehicle and kept my 1968 Camaro I had bought new before I met my wife in 1968.
Then for business I bought another 1976 truck but this time it was a 1976 Toyota Long Bed Truck which is a smaller truck but gets good mileage and with it I could tow tractors like a Bobcat for doing landscaping work. I couldn't tow a back hoe because that would be too big for a small truck to tow but I did buy a cabover camper for my 1976 Toyota Longbed Truck so I could camp where I was working on some jobs like in Mt. Shasta with my 4 year old son until I got a better place to stay there. I was a single father of a 4 year old son then who now has a bachelor's of Science degree and is almost 50 years old now.
But, in 2011 I decided to trade in our 2000 RX 300 SUV Lexus which was likely one of the best cars I ever owned and buy a 2011 Tundra new. It was and is a small 8 cylinder engine that got when I bought it 20 miles per gallon in overdrive which was great.
I had wanted a Tacoma but found I being 6 feet 5 inches didn't really fit into a Tacoma Cab but had plenty of room in my Tundra which is a 4 wheel drive with high and low range. And this vehicle has gone amazing 4 wheel drive places over the year. And what I like about it is I can go on the most severe 4 wheel drive road and still drive it 70 to 80 miles per hour down the freeway to and from home because I put Michelin all weather mud snow tires on it. With these tires I find I can go on the most extreme roads and still travel at great speed safely down the freeways at 70 or 80 mph too. So, the Tundra is the most amazing all around off road and on road car I have ever owned.
But, if you are talking ONLY 4 wheel driving the best 4 wheel drive I ever owned was an 1974 International Harvester 4 wheel drive with a 6 cylinder engine and a locked rear end. But, then again it blew out my wife's knee in a freeway traffic jam because the clutch was so stiff. So, on road it left a lot to be desired and made me never buy another stick shift again because of what happened to my wife that day.
But, off road I could literally push 2 to 3 feet of unplowed snow without batting an eye it was so good off road. And I'm not talking plowing, I'm talking about driving right through unplowed snow straight away.
