In 1961, the Soviet Union Detonated the largest nuclear weapon, the TSAR BOMBA. It's mushroom cloud was 40 miles high and could be seen 630 miles away.
end quote from PBS NEWSHOUR at approximately 30 minutes in on Friday February 2nd 2018.
By the way if you were wondering how far 630 miles is San Diego, California to REdding California near the ORegon border (Mexico being right next to San Diego) Redding to San Diego or the other way around is 644 miles.
So, just imagine a nuclear weapon going off either place and being able to see the mushroom cloud that far away. It is actually unimaginable!
However, I have seen the ocean in the 1960s up to 1970 from high on Mt. Shasta but usually then you had to be higher than 12,000 feet to be able to do this on a crystal clear day. By Car this is over 200 miles but as the crow flies it is likely only around 100 miles or less. So, imagine being able to see a mushroom cloud for 630 miles?
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
