Being an opportunist is being a survivor

When I was young I made plans for the next 20 years around basically one of two girlfriends. But, one of them got married and the other one and I broke up. So, that was the end of my plans for my life at that point.

So next, I realized since ALL my well thought out plans ended like that, that that type of planning wasn't going to work for me because I just don't do disappointment very well. As it was I was suicidal from that and being asked to leave my childhood religion for being just too 1960s for them.

So, 4 years later in 1973, by then I had stopped planning so much and had become an opportunist completely. I still went to college but stopped making my plans around marriage like that anymore or a specific college degree like when I was studying to be a computer programmer and worked in that field and bought myself a new 1968 Camaro when I was 20 years old while still attending college.

So, instead I embarked and changed majors and studied to become a psychologist which seemed like a good idea at the time because I could help others to help them prevent their suicides like I had prevented my own between 1969 and 1973.

But then, My live in girlfriend got pregnant with my first child, a son in 1973 and we married in 1974 and then I couldn't consider suicide any more because I had to raise my son then to adulthood and I did. So, I began starting businesses to support my wife and son from then on.

Being an opportunist for me was the difference between life and death in my life.

Going from more of an idealist to a compassionate pragmatist saved my life, my son's life and my first wife's life too. So, don't underestimate what being a complete opportunist will do for your life too.

By God's Grace
